Google app to replace traditional ID?

Posted on September 6, 2012

Owners of smartphones may soon be able to ditch the traditional documents necessary for ID purposes thanks to the Google Wallet app. Digital payment is becoming increasingly popular around the globe and very soon it may be possible to have digital forms of personal identification. According to Google executives, the revolution may extend to digital driving licences.

According to the MarketWatch website from the Wall Street Journal, Google are planning to allow users of E-wallet app to retain various forms of ID, including a driver’s licence on their smartphone. In theory, this means that users with digital ID could download an airport boarding pass, go through flight check in or even present ID to officials. Speaking at a Web conference recently, the head of product management for Google Wallet, Robin Dua said:

“We want you to be able to leave your leather wallet at home.”

No launch date has been provided for the new features for Google Wallet as yet and the download numbers for the app which is already available have not been released. It is already possible for Google Wallet users to store details of their American Express, Discovery, Visa and MasterCard on their smartphone and pay for goods. Google is recognised as a leader of technology, which is why the company plays a crucial role in search engine optimisation. The latest possibilities for Google Wallet could mean that SEO becomes more complex as users move away from traditional forms of ID to electronic means. This latest development may interest companies from Liverpool to LA.
