Gold standard work could win the SEOlympics

Posted on July 8, 2012

It is surprising to think that back in 2008, around the time of the Beijing Olympic Games in China, both Facebook and Twitter had barely been noticed. As the London Games are but a mere hop, skip and a jump away, a marathon change has occurred.

So important are these, and other social media networks, today, they are set to play a huge part in the Games. London 2012 will also be home to the first Social Media Olympics with many SEOs, analysts and commentators calling the event the ‘Socialympics’.

Monikering aside though, bloggers and their like will have a very important role to play. More particularly, the marketing opportunities are significant too.

Today, a great many people are likely to first hear breaking news through their social media channels in place of the TV or radio. Embracing this, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has launched its ‘Olympic Hub’.

Bringing together the likes of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, the social cauldron will allow easy access to Olympic related online content. The IOC is also urging all Olympic athletes to keep fans updated with the latest news, photos, videos and gossip.

It seems a great concept and, learning from the approach is something businesses throughout the UK can learn from.

Throughout the Games, creating your SEO content with a definite Olympic feel will likely reap rewards. Monitoring Olympic related feeds therefore is advisable.

It is not just in London where companies can benefit either, but all throughout the country. From Liverpool and the north-west, the marketing potential from aligning with the Games is clear.
