Footballer celebrates social media landmark

Posted on September 14, 2015

For many of us, social media presents a chance for us to see what our friends, family and favourite celebrities get up to on a daily basis. However, we can all be guilty of keeping an eye on how many friends and followers we have.

As a well-known public figure, that may not be one of your prime concerns, as you’re more than likely going to have a high number of followers and may not even take notice of that figure. However, German football star Mario Götze has recently celebrated reaching the 10 million like mark on social network Facebook in a way that you may not expect.

A lot of footballers have found themselves in trouble for their antics on numerous social media platforms, whether that’s for posting a controversial tweet or uploading an inappropriate picture. Burnley’s Joey Barton has probably had his fair share of bans and telling offs because of social media, especially because last year, he used Twitter to ridicule the town of his future employer.

However, not many will celebrate hitting a landmark in the same fashion that Götze did. The 23-year-old had made a promise on social media site Facebook that he would bake a banana and chocolate cake for his 10 millionth fan. The World Cup Final goalscorer was true to his word and even uploaded a video to the site to prove it.

In between games for his club, Bayern Munich, the athlete is probably already pondering how he is going to top that for his next milestone, 20 million. It makes a change to see a footballer hitting the headlines for social media use in a positive way for a change.
