Facebook to rival Google Play with launch of App Centre

Posted on May 18, 2012

A new App Centre is to be launched by Facebook over the coming weeks, to provide desktop, mobile apps and social web apps. Facebook believes that its users, which have now reached over 900 million people, will have access to all the best apps from their App Centre. Whichever apps their friends are using, whether social, desktop or mobile apps, the App Centre will help users discover them.

According to Aaron Brady, a Facebook engineer writing in a blog post, the App Centre will be the central place for Facebook users to find the latest apps, including Spotify, Viddy, Pinterest, Draw Something and Bubble Witch Saga. He further added:

“The App Center is designed to grow mobile apps that use Facebook- whether they’re on iOS, Android or the mobile web. From the mobile App Centre, users can browse apps that are compatible with their device, and if a mobile app requires installation, they will be sent to download the app from the App Store or Google Play.”

Developers will also be encouraged to create apps for Facebook.com which have to be paid for. Facebook will take 30 percent of the revenue from the apps which are created just for Facebook. However, this is the same percentage taken by Apple for IOS apps. The launch of the App Centre is to take place before the Initial Public Offering of Facebook.

Facebook and Google both feature in a company’s SEO campaign, with both providing access to millions of users worldwide, from Liverpool to Los Angeles.
