Facebook introduces privacy check-ups

Posted on September 9, 2014

In the last couple of years, the issue of privacy has been thrown into the spotlight for many internet users, especially those with a presence on social media sites such as Facebook. Now, with users more reluctant to enter their personal data, the network has responded by offering privacy check-ups.

The social network is rolling out a feature that will allow users to conduct a three-stage check, which aims to show them how they can control their privacy settings, such as choosing who can see the data available on their profile pages and how this is shared.

As part of its privacy upgrade, it has also made changes to the site’s default settings, which now limit what is shared publically.

Users of the social platform can expect to see this check-up appear as a pop-up on their news feeds in the coming weeks, although it can be run manually from the ‘privacy shortcuts’ tab near the notifications button at the top of the screen.

The site will also be using a blue dinosaur character as a mascot, which will serve as a guide for these checks, advising users and instructing them on how to adjust their privacy settings. This feature has been in the pipeline since April this year, with the site running successful experiments that led to this large-scale rollout.

At the present time, these check-ups are only available for the desktop version of the site, but the company is continuing to work on a way to introduce this feature to mobile versions of the site.
