Facebook film honoured at Academy Awards

Posted on March 4, 2011

The makers of The Social Network, a movie about the rise to power of networking site Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg, are celebrating after it bagged three Oscars at the 2011 Academy Awards.

However, it was a night of mixed emotions for the producers – it failed to win any awards in the major categories that it was nominated in. Mirroring the recent Bafta awards, the movie, directed by David Fincher, came off second best to bookie’s favourite The King’s Speech. However, it was triumphant in the writing, soundtrack and film editing categories.

The film follows the fortunes of Zuckerberg as he struggled to get the site off the ground. Springing to life in 2004 as a networking site exclusively for Harvard students, it now boasts more than 600 million unique users, making it the most popular social networking site on the planet.

In fact, such is its success that it can make or break the fortunes of many businesses. Lots of companies use Facebook as a means to interact with their customers, and an ill-timed post or inappropriate comment can make headlines. The power it wields means that it is a vital ingredient to any company wishing to expand, with many search engine optimisation jobs dedicated to formulating strategies on the site. In fact, its influence goes beyond SEO – it is eyeing search giant Google as its main competition in dominion over the web.

Former frontman for rock band Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor, was responsible for the award-winning soundtrack. Posing with his statuette on the red carpet, he said:

“It was the best experience I’ve ever had from start to finish.”
