Dorsey back in the hot seat at Twitter

Posted on October 8, 2015

Jack Dorsey, founder of Twitter and its former Chief Executive Officer, has announced that he is back in charge as CEO at the tech company.

The 38-year-old announced via tweet – naturally – on the morning of 5th October that he was to serve as its CEO, along with holding the same post for Square, a company that handles online credit and debit payments on mobile phones via an attachable card reader:

Dorsey had temporarily filled the CEO vacancy following the departure of Dick Costolo in June, who had presided over falling share prices and stiff opposition in the form of Snapchat, Instagram and Pintrest.

In an effort to combat a stalling user base, Twitter has spent recent weeks suggesting possible changes to the service, including changing the limit of 140 characters to tweets.

Dorsey became Twitter’s CEO in 2007, and was credited with invigorating the platform. However, in a shock move, he was replaced the following year by Ev Williams. He went on to establish Square a year later, but as revealed by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which regulates stock exchanges, he has no intention of abandoning his post there.

Dorsey’s predecessor Costolo congratulated him soon after the news broke, stating that:

“Jack is a calm and thoughtful leader. He is bold, forthright, decisive, and the team loves working with him.

“As I step off the board, two reminders: Those banging pots and pans outside Twitter know the least about what’s going on inside Twitter, and @Twitter, there is only one narrative that matters and it’s the one you create for this world.”
