Don’t let typos cost you money or prestige

Posted on May 13, 2015

Slight mistakes in content are all too easy to make when you’re a news provider. What’s more, when they are particularly funny or embarrassing, they tend to spread like wildfire over social media.

To help you know what not to do, here are a few examples of expensive or embarrassing typos:

A better Amercia

During the run up to the 2012 US presidential election, Mitt Romney’s campaign released an iPhone app that allowed users to take photos with 14 different campaign overlays. Unfortunately, one of them promised “A Better Amercia”. The news of course soon went viral among Obama supporters. Did it cost Romney the presidency? Probably not, but it surely didn’t help.

Pubic education

Spelling mistakes are particularly amusing when educational institutions make them. The Red Lion Area High School in southern Pennsylvania made such a gaffe when one of its posters asked the reader to “become a partner in pubic education”.

The £9m typo

The UK Government faced a £9m legal bill when Companies House mistakenly recorded the wrong firm as being insolvent by adding an “s” to the name. Although officials corrected the error within days, the loss of reputation and credit facilities forced a Cardiff-based business into administration.

While these are just a few examples, they demonstrate the importance of getting your content from a news writing service with a QC process. Even highly skilled writers can miss the odd typo, mostly because they focus more on the story and structure than minor details. A proof reader, however, would have easily spotted and corrected these embarrassing mistakes.
