With Google officially celebrating its 18th birthday this week, it’s a word that’s become part of our everyday vocabulary, both as a proper noun and a verb. Why ‘Google’ though? For such a reputable site that’s now officially in its adult years, it seems a bit of a babyish name, doesn’t it?

Study finds that UK has a smartphone addiction

A new report from Deloitte has shown that Brits are addicted to their mobile phones, with around one in three having an obsession so intense that they need to check for messages in the middle of the night.

Will the Physical Web change the way websites function?

Google is at the forefront of developing what is known as the Physical Web, which may impact some aspects of web development.

Websites are highly influenced by the activities of Google. Every time Google makes a big change to its algorithms, savvy web developers adapt their websites in order to retain a high rank in Google’s search results.

Why can’t Google work out when it was born?

If you’ve used Google this morning, you’ll probably have seen that it’s celebrating its own birthday with a Doodle today, and what better way to start your search than with a party hat-wearing letter G blowing up a balloon and turning it into an ‘oogle’ before floating off? Clearly, G can exhale helium.

It’s National Coding Week 2016

Despite having just turned 40, I consider myself very young. Those who know me would probably say that’s code for ‘immature’, but I’ll take that too. Whether or not I’m really considered young in the grand scheme of things, I can still remember my school days very vividly, and the lack of opportunities we had to code in school when compared to children of today.

No, this isn’t going to be one of those ‘back in my day’ posts, but back in my day we didn’t have PCs and Macs in every school. In primary schools, we had nothing. The closest we came to a computer was a scientific calculator, and only the rich kids had those. In secondary school, we had computer rooms, but they resembled the control room scenes from films such as Apollo 13. There were huge machines with very little power, and lessons were taught by people who (more…)
