YouTube reveals new moneymaking features

Video platform giant YouTube has revealed a whole host of new features in the works that people will be able to use to earn money.

According to Search Engine Journal, the new features were announced last week as part of an insider glimpse into YouTube’s 2022 roadmap, with Neal Mohan, the platform’s Chief Product Officer, breaking the news. Here’s just some of what’s in store for users of the platform:

YouTube Shorts is a short-form content style offering that rivals the likes of TikTok and Instagram Reels. It was announced back in 2020, and since its wider release, Short creators have been able to make money through the Shorts Fund, which, interestingly, is open to everyone on the platform, even if they don’t meet the eligibility criteria for monetising their standard videos.

While the Shorts Fund will be continuing, YouTube plans to release three new monetisation features for Shorts. The first is a way to create branded videos using BrandConnect, with the second being the introduction of Super Chats to Shorts. A feature already available for livestreams on the platform, Super Chats allow viewers to buy highlighted messages that feature on a video. The third monetisation feature headed for these short-form videos will be of particular interest to ecommerce businesses, as YouTube plans to test out the capability to buy products directly from Shorts.

As mentioned, when livestreaming on the platform, creators can already make money using features like Super Chats. Soon, viewers will be able to purchase and gift channel memberships (which provide access to member-only content on certain applicable channels) to other viewers on a livestream. A similar feature already exists on the Twitch platform, and YouTube is currently testing out gifted channel memberships, with these set to be rolled out to more channels in the months to come.

In addition to these features, there are several more being considered – such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and blockchain.

At present, all of these features are either in the consideration or testing phases, so it can’t be said for certain if or when they’ll be rolled out widely. However, for those that use video content and those who have online shops, they’re well worth looking out for.

Video is just one example of the many content options businesses have at their disposal to reach their target audience. If you need help putting together unique, engaging content, reach out to us at Engage Web today.
