Why looking after yourself can do wonders for your business

Why looking after yourself can do wonders for your business

It’s that time of year again where everyone laces up their trainers and heads to the gym, exclaiming “new year, new me!”

We give it five minutes.

However, there’s a lot to be said for looking after your physical health when running a business (although this applies to everyone, really). We’re not suggesting you join a CrossFit class or a bootcamp, but below are some real, tangible benefits to incorporating wellness into your hectic daily routine, which can result in your business reaping rewards.

Improved concentration

If you find that a large portion of your working day is spent gazing out of the window (or thinking about what you’re having for tea), odds are, your work is probably piling up at an alarming rate.

When you find your concentration waning, it can help to take a quick break and go for a walk. Just 15 minutes a day has been proven to increase your energy levels, improve your mood and even strengthen your memory. If you’re reluctant to step away from your desk for even a second (except to use the loo), think of it as an investment. That 15 minutes, when built into a routine, can set you up for a better day overall – meaning you’ll end up getting more work done.

A better work environment

People who exercise regularly find that even just going for a walk can promote a feeling of calmness in an otherwise chaotic day.

This, in turn, can often lead to a less stressful working environment, as you may find that you can approach your workload with a bit more clarity. By looking after yourself, eating well (if you’re also surrounded by leftover mince pies and chocolates from Christmas, we hear you) and taking time to find a sense of balance in your day, this will in turn have a positive impact on your work life.

We’re not promising you’ll become as zen as a Buddhist monk – but close enough!
