Link Chain

Why is internal linking critical for SEO?

John Mueller from Google recently stressed the importance of internal linking for search engine optimisation (SEO) but affirms that a strategic approach is essential.

Can breadcrumb navigation help with internal linking?

Among the internal linking topics discussed during last week’s Google SEO office-hours hangout was breadcrumbs. These are a navigational aid on a website that allow you to see the hierarchy of the pages on the site and can help users to find the information they are looking for more quickly, while also making it easier for search engines to discover content on your website.

You may have seen breadcrumbs in the past, which are formatted like below:

Breadcrumbs, says Mueller, are a great way to help improve the internal linking on your website and can help visitors to navigate the site.

Mueller adds that even though internal linking isn’t a ranking factor as such, it is one of the most influential things you can do on your website to direct search engines and guide visitors to the key pages on your site. These are normally your “contact us” page, product categories and any other useful information you think will help your visitors to make a purchase decision.

A strategic approach to internal linking

Mueller stresses that you need to look at internal linking in a strategic way by thinking about which pages are the most important on your site, then considering how you can create internal links from other pages on your site to the main pages. This helps search engines and visitors to understand the most important pages and content on your website.
