What value do blogs on a sub-domain have?

What value do blogs on a sub-domain have?

One problem we often come across with websites is when the website owner, or usually the design agency, has created a blog for the site and housed it on a subdomain, or sometimes a completely different domain. For example, they might have created news.directcontent.co.uk, instead of directcontent.co.uk/news.

What’s the difference though? Surely it doesn’t matter?

Well actually it’s critical. Housing your blog on a subdomain has no impact to the SEO of your website whatsoever. Yes it will provide a few external links, but it will add nothing to the content of your site because Google sees it as a different site entirely. Any content you add to a blog on a subdomain isn’t counted towards the content on your website.

Therefore, if you have your blog on a subdomain you may as well be adding content to someone else’s website, for all the worth it’s doing to you.

So why do people do it? One reason is they know no better. They think that by adding a subdomain they’re somehow giving Google another part of their site to index. They’re not; Google will treat it differently from your site. Some web design agencies won’t give out access to the SEO company that wants to install a blog, therefore they suggest a subdomain, highlighting their lack of knowledge of SEO. Often the client will agree and the blog will be created, thus the work on the blog will be in vain.

Remember, if you’re planning to add a blog to your website to increase your website’s content and improve your Google rankings, it needs to be in a directory of your website, not on a subdomain. If your web design agency says they can’t do this, get a new agency!
