While AI-writing tools like ChatGPT are interesting and can help you generate ideas, they have unfortunately become a lazy man’s plaything. From stories of sci-fi magazines closing submissions due to being swamped with AI dross, to fears students may be able to get qualifications just by using ChatGPT prompts, it does feel like the negative uses of the tool are currently outweighing the positive ones.
Still, at least some students are making it very obvious they’re not writing essays themselves!

The idea that ChatGPT can write an article for you might tempt you to use it for your own blog rather than spend time writing articles. For example, if I really couldn’t have been bothered writing a blog today, I could have asked ChatGPT to “write a 300-word blog for a digital marketing agency”.
If I had done that, this is what I would have got:
“Digital marketing has become an essential component of any business strategy, with an increasing number of businesses relying on it to drive growth and success. However, the constantly evolving nature of the digital landscape can make it challenging for businesses to keep up with the latest trends and best practices. This is where a digital marketing agency comes in.
A digital marketing agency is a team of professionals who specialize in developing and executing digital marketing strategies that help businesses achieve their marketing objectives. Whether you’re looking to increase website traffic, generate leads, or boost brand awareness, a digital marketing agency can help you achieve your goals.
One of the key benefits of working with a digital marketing agency is access to a team of experts with a diverse range of skills and expertise. From SEO specialists and social media managers to content creators and graphic designers, a digital marketing agency has the resources and knowledge needed to deliver effective campaigns across a range of channels.
Another advantage of working with a digital marketing agency is the ability to track and measure the success of your campaigns. A good agency will use data-driven insights to optimize campaigns in real-time, ensuring that your marketing budget is being used effectively.
Finally, partnering with a digital marketing agency can save you time and resources, allowing you to focus on other areas of your business. Instead of trying to manage your marketing efforts in-house, you can leave it to the experts and rest assured that your campaigns are in good hands.
In conclusion, digital marketing is a complex and ever-changing field, and it can be challenging for businesses to keep up. By working with a digital marketing agency, you can access a team of experts with the skills and knowledge needed to deliver effective campaigns across a range of channels. With their help, you can achieve your marketing objectives and grow your business in today’s digital landscape.”
Now, in some ways, this is fine. It’s grammatically correct and free of typos (although it has defaulted to US spellings), and most of what it says is true. However, did you enjoy reading it? Probably not. It isn’t engaging, and isn’t giving you any specific information. There’s no opinion, insight or specialist knowledge. Of course, I’ve used minimal prompts here and could have refined it, but in short, it’s what you get if you ask a computer to write about something.
It’s also what Google would probably not see as “helpful” or “useful” content, and Google’s somewhat on-the-fence stance on AI writing is something you should think about before stuffing your website with ChatGPT filler.
On its Search Central website, Google has said that AI writing is not necessarily spam, but this shouldn’t be interpreted as a licence to get AI to write everything. The examples given by Google of where AI has long been used to create content are the likes of sports results and weather forecasts, where little creativity in writing would be expected, suggesting that ChatGPT blog writing would still be frowned upon and not in keeping with Google’s E-E-A-T (expertise, experience, authoritativeness, trustworthiness) mantra.
