Facebook has confirmed that it is currently developing an app exclusively for celebrities.
It was reported in AllThingsD that the app will help famous people engage with their fans, monitor feedback and respond quickly in discussions.
Speaking about the VIP app, a spokesperson said:
“We are currently testing some mobile features designed to help public figures interact with their fans. We are testing these features with a small group of partners and will share more details should we roll it out more widely.”
It is believed that the app would bring Facebook up to speed with other networks boasting celeb-friendly features, such as its own photo-sharing network Instagram and rival Twitter.
Twitter has become one of the leading platforms on which celebrities can make semi-official announcements. Similarly, breaking stories have been known to reach newsfeeds on Twitter before being broadcast through mainstream media sites.
Part of Twitter’s popularity with celebrities and their fans has been linked to the ‘@’ symbol, which makes engagement simple.
Facebook hasn’t lagged completely behind its rival for breaking news; US actor Channing Tatum used Facebook to give fans the first picture of his baby boy.
A list of the 10 celebrities with the most likes on the social network is dominated by big names in the music industry – with footballer Christiano Ronaldo, ranked fifth, being the only non-musician. Twitter’s list of the 10 celebrities with the most followers shows a similar trend – with Barack Obama being the only non-musician on the list.
