Twitter to release paid ‘Super Follow’ option

Social media giant Twitter has announced that it will be launching a new feature called “Super Follows” later this year, which will allow users to charge their followers in order to gain access to exclusive content.

The announcement was made last Thursday in a presentation for its investors. Twitter announced that its new feature would provide users with the option to charge for extra content that would not be available to their regular following. This content will include videos, newsletters, discounts and deals. In order to access this exclusive content, users would have to pay a subscription fee per month, becoming “super followers”.

Both its users and investors have been asking Twitter to release a subscription model, and its decision to do so comes at a time when online content creators and “influencers” are turning to tools like Patreon to cash in on their large followings. In a statement, Twitter said:

“Exploring audience funding opportunities like Super Follows will allow creators and publishers to be directly supported by their audience and will incentivize them to continue creating content that their audience loves.”

In the presentation, Twitter didn’t reveal the percentage of the subscription fees that it would be sharing with content creators. The social network also didn’t reveal a precise date for its launch, saying that it would have “more to share” on Super Follows in the months to come.

The news comes not so long after Twitter’s acquirement of Revue, which allows users to publish newsletters with a paid option. According to The Guardian, Twitter is also in the midst of beta testing “Twitter Spaces”, a platform set to rival audio-based chatroom app Clubhouse.

These moves allow both Twitter and its users to branch out into a new form of revenue in the online world, and they will provide businesses with yet another way of sharing content with existing and potential customers. With statistics revealing that the social network has 187 million active daily users worldwide (as of the third quarter of 2020), both individuals and businesses alike that produce content online would be wise to keep an eye on Super Follows and its release.
