Twitter tests out in-app shopping feature

Social media giant Twitter has announced it is trialling a new ‘Shop Module’ to provide businesses with the capability to sell products on the platform.

Six years ago, Twitter first ventured into experiments with shopping, but ultimately it decided to take a step back in order to focus its efforts on other aspects of the social network. Then, back in March of this year, Twitter revealed its new plans to release shopping capabilities onto the platform via its Twitter Investor Relations account:

These plans have taken the form of the new Shop Module. This is an extension of Twitter’s Professional Profiles, which I wrote about back in April. These profiles allow businesses to access certain tools and features for work-related use, and the Shop Module will feature at the top of a Professional Profile. Here, people will get the chance to scroll through a product carousel, learn more about products by clicking on them and purchase products, all through the Twitter app.

Announcing the new Shop Module on the social network’s blog, Twitter’s Product Lead, Bruce Falck, said:

“With this pilot, we’ll get to explore how our engaged, responsive and chatty audience reacts to products. And, fundamentally, it’ll give us the chance to keep learning about which shopping experiences people prefer on Twitter.”

Like Professional Profiles, the Shop Module will be initially rolled out to a select number of people. To be eligible for the new tool, a user must be based in the US, use the app on an iOS device and use it in English. However, as with all significant updates like this, if the Shop Module proves to be a hit, it likely won’t be long before we can use it over here in the UK.
