Microblogging site Twitter has brought out a new feature that allows its users to embed quotes from other tweeters into posts.
Previously, if someone wanted to quote another member, the message would be replicated exactly into their Tweet, often leaving little room for further comment. However, now users will have an extra 116 characters to say what they would like on their news feed.
It is believed the new move will not only help with the visual appeal of the social platform, but will also reduce the chances of the original tweet being distorted. This could be of significant importance to any firms that are engaged in internet marketing efforts, as they will be able to quote their customers accurately, yet still be able to deliver their own message on top.
According to The Next Web (TNW), it is understood that changes will be made to Twitter’s API (application programming interface) to enable the new Quote Tweet button. This means that, one day, the new feature could be supported by third-party apps. While TNW noted that this sort of move is rather unusual for a social platform, it could help to open up the tool for use by a wider audience, potentially even attracting those who do not use the official applications.
The feature, which the microblogging website reportedly began testing last summer, is now available on iPhones and the main Twitter desktop version. It is thought that it will also be released for Android devices in the near future.
