Twitter releases tipping feature to all

Social networking site Twitter has announced the expansion of its tipping tool, with all users now able to earn money on their profiles.

Twitter first announced its tip jar feature in May. Available on mobiles only, the tip jar took the form of a small icon on a user’s profile, with people able to support their favourite accounts by sending them money via payment services like Cash App and PayPal. At the time, the feature was only available to a select group of creators, non-profits and journalists while tipping was being tested out.

Now officially called Tips, the feature is being rolled out to all users, and the payment options have been expanded. Twitter announced this on its blog, saying:

“Whether you want to tip your favorite account because you adore their commentary, send some love to an emerging comedy creator for their hilarious Tweets, help a small business owner through a difficult time, give to an important cause – whatever you want to support (and we know you already have some ideas), Tips is here to help you do it.”

Users can now tip using Patreon, PayPal, Chipper, Cash App, Bandcamp, Razorpay, Venmo and Wealthsimple Cash. In addition to these, tips can also be given using Bitcoin via the cryptocurrency’s Lightning Network, although this is currently only available for those in the US (with New York and Hawaii excluded) and El Salvador.

Twitter is also adding the fundraising platform GoFundMe and a Brazilian platform for mobile payments, PicPay, to the list of payment services.

To give a tip, all people need to do is go onto the profile they’d like to tip, and click the money icon in the top right-hand corner, next to ‘Following’. This will bring up the series of payment options, and they’ll then be taken out of the Twitter app to make the payment. Twitter has stated it takes no cut of the tips sent.

This widespread release of Tips on Twitter is yet another way businesses can make money on the web, and it’s just one example of the many rewards they can receive by putting out high-quality, engaging content online. If you need help with online content, speak to our team at Engage Web.
