Twitter redesigns site to resemble Facebook

Social networking site Twitter has revealed plans to update the design of users’ account profile pages, prompting many comments comparing the new look to social media rival Facebook’s profile pages.

The update, which was outlined in a blog post, will feature a bigger profile photo along with a full width cover image – a reflection of Facebook’s profile pages following their redesign in 2013.

Users will be able to make their pages unique by pinning tweets to the top of their profiles so followers “can see what you’re all about”, whilst those which have had the most interaction will be made bolder and larger than other tweets “so the account’s best content is easy to find”. The redesign will also allow users to select different styles of timelines to view, with the options being: tweets, retweets and replies, and tweets featuring photos or videos.

David Bellona, Twitter Designer, has said:

“Moment by moment, your Twitter profile shows the world who you are. Starting today, it will be even easier (and, we think, more fun) to express yourself through a new and improved web profile.”

Twitter’s redesign will be visible through the web version of the site, and will be made initially available to just a small group of users, which is set to include some celebrities; however, it will be made accessible to the whole site in the near future. New users who sign up to the social network will also start with this new design, and changes will only be applicable to users’ profile pages rather than newsfeeds.
