Twitter begins rebranding to ‘X’

Twitter owner Elon Musk announced over the weekend that the social media platform will be undergoing a major rebrand, starting with the long-standing blue bird logo.

In a series of tweets, the billionaire teased a complete revamp of Twitter’s brand identity, and tweeted to say a new domain had already began redirecting to Twitter’s website. A new logo is already visible for users accessing the site, with the name of the app and its layout soon to be changed too.

According to Musk, as well as new Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino, ‘X’ is designed to be more than just a social media app. Yaccarino said in a tweet:

“X is the future state of unlimited interactivity – centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we’re just beginning to imagine.”

Whether posts made on X will continue to be referred to as ‘tweets’ is currently unknown.

The idea of a ‘super app’ originates from the Chinese app WeChat, which citizens can use to complete a range of everyday tasks such as paying bills and ordering taxis. Musk’s decision to ditch Twitter’s long-standing brand identity signals a clear intention to move away from what Twitter has been best known for since it first emerged on the mainstream.

In the coming weeks and months, we can expect to see a number of further changes and developments to Twitter, as well as an official name and domain change, as X chases its goal of becoming an app for ‘everything’.

With the never-ending upheaval of Twitter, as well as the launch of Meta’s text-based social media app Threads, the world of social media appears to be changing before our eyes.
