If you’re regularly posting content on social media, you may ask yourself: should I be using hashtags?
In short, the answer is yes – but it pays to know how to use hashtags well.
In this blog, we’ll aim to cover what hashtags are, why you should be using them – and why there’s such a thing as too many.
What exactly is a hashtag, anyway?
Using hashtags is a popular way to categorise and track content on social media.
You can use hashtags on most of the major social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube.
Why should I be using them?
Regularly using hashtags is a good way to expand your brand’s reach. They can be incorporated into your social media bios, posts and comments, and make it easier for people searching for content on this topic to find you.
If, for example, you’re selling athletic wear, then you might create a promotional post with hashtags such as #gymgear or #activewear.
Depending on the wording used and the context of the hashtag, this can be written within the main body of the text (so long as it flows naturally) or included at the end of the post.
Be mindful, however, that you don’t want to overdo it. Too many hashtags can appear spammy, and can appear quite affronting to the eye, which will likely result in the viewer scrolling right past your post.
While hashtags are a powerful marketing tool, you should use them sparingly, and conduct appropriate research to ensure you’re including the right ones – i.e., the hashtags your target audience is actively searching for.
If you use hashtags correctly, they can be a great way to encourage your customers to engage with you on social media. When done right, your brand’s visibility will be increased, and you should see an increase in the right consumers finding your page.
