Tips on creating the perfect customer avatar

Tips on creating the perfect customer avatar

When looking to market your products online, it can be daunting to know where to start.

In a competitive landscape, you may feel that the biggest threat to your sales comes from being overshadowed by your competitors. While this may be true in some circumstances, there is another danger which is often overlooked – that is, by not reaching the right customers in the first place.

Some business owners may be tempted to appeal to as many people as possible, with the logic that the more potential prospects they reach, the higher the chance of a sale. While this could be true with more generic items, if the product you are offering is quite niche, you’ll want to make sure you’re just concentrating on appealing to the right person – or you’ll end up with a product that blends in, rather than one that stands out.

What is a customer avatar?

A customer avatar, put simply, is a persona you create to represent your ideal client.

Ideally, you’ll want to take into account factors such as your customer’s age, gender, income level and any interests they may have – particularly if the product you are selling is something like sports equipment. You can even give your avatar a name, to help you imagine them as a real person.

By understanding how your perfect customer thinks, the language they use and what their day-to-day life looks like, you can build a better picture of how to market your product to them, addressing their pain points and solving their problems.

The best way to understand your ideal target demographic is to build a deeper understanding of them – remember, your target customer is not you, so don’t fall into the trap of creating a marketing campaign based on your own likes and interests.

By asking customers to fill out surveys after purchasing a product, or going online to research the keywords your audience is using, you can alter your language to appeal directly to your customer – giving you a better chance of improving your rankings and becoming found by the right person.
