The power of Google to boost social networking site

According to figures from Experian Hitwise, the number of visitors to social networking site Google+ increased to almost 15 million at the end of September 2011, from 1.1 million just the week before. The huge boost to figures occurred as Google utilised the power of its search engine to promote Google Plus to users during its war with Facebook.

Although the social media site, Google Plus had previously been by invitation only, the company decided to make it available to everyone. Google promoted the move by using its popular search engine page, having a blue arrow pointing to the top left corner which is where you will find Google Plus. Figures from ComScore reveal that Google searches accounted for 11.1 billion in August alone, which helped to boost the visitors to its social networking site.

IDC analyst Scott Ellison believes that in theory, Google has an edge over Facebook, purely because it has greater assets. Although Facebook has 800 million members, it hasn’t been as resourceful with the use of sharing options, whereas Google has introduced videos, games and sharing circles. The senior vice president of engineering for Google Plus, Vic Gundotra pointed out that 91 improvements have been made to the social networking site in just three months.

The huge boost in figures prove just how powerful Google is, which is why businesses compete for the first page of Google search results. The search engine giant plays an integral role in a company’s search engine optimisation programme.
