The Man Booker Contest – lessons in Search Engine Optimisation

The Man Booker Literary Prize of £50,000, awarded annually in October, always has the literary world buzzing with controversy. It is an opportunity for authors to showcase their best work of the previous year, bringing it into the public eye. This year the five judges are chaired by Andrew Motion, the former Poet Laureate, and they have chosen a short list of six titles, with the favourite at 2/1 being Tom McCarthy’s “C”

The Man Booker Contest is very similar to SEO. Search engine optimisation (SEO) is also about getting your business website to be a favourite. The prize is limitless, as new and repeat custom is generated. The short-list is those websites that rank on the first results page of any search engine, and the judges are the potential customers, or users of the search engines.

However, the acid test is the after sales, which bring in millions for the Man Booker Winner. There is no point in a web site rising in the rankings if it does not generate an increase in business. The professional SEO writer is an integral part of the winning business team. Just as it would be ludicrous to expect a painter to draw up architect’s plans, so it would be foolish to expect an inexperienced member of the marketing team to write web content. The professional writer usually contracted to an article writing service works hard at producing the perfect piece to suit the audience with meticulous attention to grammar and spelling; not so very different from the work of a prize-winning novelist.
