User generated content is perhaps one of the greatest methods of adding content to a website for SEO purposes. Writing reams of content can be very time consuming, especially when you have a business to run. Also, hiring a staff member just to write content for your website can prove very expensive, which in the current financial climate is something every business wants to avoid where possible. The alternative is to have your website’s visitors write the content for you.
This sounds very difficult, and in truth it can be initially as getting the ball rolling takes time. However, once you have your website set up to allow users to post on it themselves, you can find that your website’s content quite literally ‘writes itself’.
In order to utilise user generated content, you need to consider the following:
- Ensure that you are able to pre-moderate the content in case of foul language, adult content or content posted by competitors
- Make it as easy as possible for users to post content, with small forms and very few fields to fill in
- Offer people links back to their websites in turn for comments, this will encourage more posts
- Ask questions with your content, the more questions you ask, the more you’ll encourage answers
- Controversy breeds discussion; whether someone agrees with you or not, they’re likely to post their own content if they have an opinion
