Students at Plymouth North High school, Massachusetts were celebrating their graduation in June this year, receiving their diplomas during a graduation ceremony. The excited celebrations soon turned to disappointment as students realised that the diplomas contained spelling errors.
Two errors appeared on the diplomas causing embarrassment for the school, who champion the Literacy Leads the Way programme. The fault was actually a result of human error at the printing company in Minnesota. A statement from the company said:
“A human error was made as we transferred artwork to a new system. The mistake has been corrected and we have modified our processes for the future.”
The spelling error was discovered on 300 diplomas, with officials at the school not discovering the error until the graduation ceremony. The mother of one student said that her daughter wasn’t embarrassed by the mistake, but felt disappointed. The students want the diploma to be perfect. However, one student put a positive spin on the experience pointing out that the errors made the class of 2011 special, saying:
“It’s a nice little Plymouth North thing to remember.”
A business website that contains errors probably wouldn’t find customers and website visitors so accommodating. Customers expect a website to contain correct information, taking very little effort to find. Spelling and grammatical errors not only create a poor image, but will result in a visitor quickly moving on to the next site.
