Social networking on the Xbox

Social networking on the Xbox

Playing on your games console hasn’t always been the most sociable thing you could do, but that changed with online play from Sony and Microsoft. It’s about to get a lot more sociable too as Microsoft announced at E3 (the video games conference held every year in LA) that the Xbox would soon be getting Facebook and Twitter, so players can keep in touch with friends from around the globe.

Facebook and Twitter will be accessible from with Xbox Live, which means players can update their status and ‘tweet’ away while on their games console.

Obviously just having the ability to update Facebook and Twitter via an Xbox wouldn’t mean that much if that’s all it were about, as you could just use your phone, your laptop or any Internet ready device. No, the Xbox of course goes a little further, and that’s where the games come in.

Some games, starting with Tiger Woods PGA Tour, will allow you to update your Facebook status with live play updates and screenshots. So if you’d made a particularly sweet putt on the 18th, you can let the world know about it instantly.

The service will go further again soon with the ability to invite your Facebook friends into your games.

Now that’s sociable.
