Snapchat releases new subscription offering

The photo-sharing social media platform Snapchat has now launched a new subscription service for its users.

Called Snapchat+, the new subscription offering will see people pay a monthly fee in exchange for exclusive features within the app. In a statement by the platform, Snapchat said that these will be:

“A collection of exclusive, experimental, and pre-release features available in Snapchat for $3.00/month.”

The platform added that those who subscribe will allow receive priority support from the platform.

As reported by Social Media Today, leaked information revealed that Snapchat+ features will include being able to access exclusive icons, an exclusive profile badge that indicates the user is a subscriber, the ability to pin another user in the app as their number one best friend and, perhaps most interestingly, access to new data insights, such as information on which users have rewatched a Snapchat Story and the location history of a friend over a 24-hour period.

Social Media Today also reported that a one-week free trial will be offered, with subscriptions available for one-month, six-month, and 12-month periods. The offering will firstly be released to users in the UK, US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, France, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, before the platform looks to further expand the service into other countries as time goes on.

It may be the case that the new Snapchat+ features will likely only appeal to the most devout of Snapchat users. However, this new offering does reflect the rising trend of social media platforms releasing exclusive, subscription-only features, such as Twitter and its Twitter Blue offering.
