SEO: think in terms of spiders

Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice unthoughtful navigation. Okay, that’s not how the original saying goes, but when it comes to search engine optimisation, the above phrase is definitely more accurate. When it comes to your SEO, you need to think in terms of spiders, webs, and sticky spider traps.

It may not be pleasant, but it’s impossible to overlook the connections between the net and spiders. This is particularly true when you’re looking into search engine optimisation. Search engines send out their little spiders to crawl all over your site, navigating their little trails across your own personal little part of the web. If your web is too sticky or tangled, it makes it impossible for the search engines to review your site properly.

Navigation can play a big part in your site’s success or failure. A clear navigation enables Google to crawl all pages of your site, leading to more pages being up for grabs for the search results. The more pages Google crawls, the more of your SEO work is worthwhile. A bad navigation can not only prevent your pages from being crawled, it can trap search spiders, putting them off some pages permanently.

When designing your site’s navigation, think in terms of a clear, well-structured web. Inter-navigation between strands is important, but not to the extent of sacrificing clarity. Try to create logical paths for the search engine spiders to crawl, with logical links between paths to strengthen your site’s overall relevance.
