A Twitter scam that has been lurking in the shadows of social media for a while, has reappeared, promising Twitter users more followers. At best, the scam will use your account to become a nuisance or pose a threat to other users or at worst, may gain access to your credit card details.
The scam is recognisable by a Tweet which claims that they will follow back if you follow them. The Tweet also includes a shortened URL, which has been accused by some of making it easier for users to be fooled by scams. Clicking on the link will redirect you to a website where you will be offered a service which promises hundreds of new followers for your account on Twitter. You will be presented with two options; a free service and a VIP service which will require your credit card details. At this point, you will be asked for your log in details for your Twitter account, which should alert you to the possibility of a ruse. However, many users have fallen prey to the scam in their rush to secure new followers.
Scams like this can make SEO jobs much more difficult, but most companies are aware of scams and can spot the signs of a fraudulent service. Search engine optimisation techniques rely on followers being interested in the company rather than being random followers, making a scam such as this redundant for a business. A well thought out social media campaign will result in a higher number of followers, which will increase the return on investment for an organisation.
