Twitter recently introduced its trends tool to more cities in the UK, including Cardiff. Now the city’s people will be able to find out what’s happening in their area by using the social media site. According to Twitter, regional trends will let users discover what’s happening in various cities around the UK. Originally, trends were limited to Birmingham, London, Manchester, Glasgow, or the UK as a whole.
The cities which now have the trends service include Cardiff, Brighton, Belfast, Edinburgh, Bristol, Leicester, Leeds, Nottingham, Newcastle, Sheffield, Liverpool and Portsmouth. A training manager at the journalism school for Cardiff University, Emma Meese believes that the trends service will place Cardiff as a cosmopolitan city. Trends on Twitter will help to build excitement about the city, informing people of events and happenings in Cardiff, according to Meese. She went on to add that Twitter trends are useful for anyone visiting a city, so that they know what’s going on in an unfamiliar place.
The initial trends to appear for Cardiff were fairly general, including Starbucks and Christmas. The expansion of the Twitter trends tool will also be of interest to businesses in those areas as it will help promote events. Twitter plays a role in search engine optimisation and companies or organisations in the newly added areas may have to amend their SEO campaign. Using Twitter trends will help to raise awareness in local areas rather than competing with companies all over the UK. It is hoped that other cities will be included in regional trends soon, including Chester.
