Pope Benedict XVI signs up for Twitter

An announcement has recently been made by Vatican officials that Pope Benedict XVI will send his first official tweet on 12th December 2012. The initial tweet will be sent by the Pope during the live public audience held once a week at the Vatican. Initially eight languages will be used for the first tweet, although more languages will added at a later date. At the start of December, before the Pope had even sent or received a tweet, he had 200,000 followers, with that number steadily increasing.

The first tweets would concentrate on a selection of questions asked of the Pope concerning belief and faith. The tweets are expected to be sent out on a weekly basis initially, increasing steadily. According to Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, head of the communication department of the Vatican, the Pope will approve each tweet personally. Although it isn’t likely that the Pope will comment on the latest events or give his personal thoughts of the Vatican, his tweets will be carefully selected spiritual beliefs and thoughts. Vatican officials are hoping that it won’t be long before the Pope has an international following, with his thoughts and words being re-tweeted and shared all over the world.

The main aim of the Pope is to connect with people of all ages around the world and Twitter is one way to accomplish that. Businesses from Liverpool to LA also realise that, as they utilise Twitter in their SEO campaign. Search engine optimisation techniques rely on social media networks to spread the word.
