Poor grammar means upsetting review for self-published author

A review of Jacqueline Howett’s self published e-book pointed out that it contained spelling and grammatical errors, resulting in upset for the author. The reviewer, a blogger named Big Al, indicated that the errors may prevent readers from completing the book. He wrote:

“Reading shouldn’t be that hard”

In her defence, Howett had received four and five star Amazon reviews, and requested that the review be removed. As Big Al did not remove his critical review of the book, a heated exchange between them soon ended up on Twitter, where the thread attracted over 300 comments, mostly siding with Big Al. Some of the people who left comments were worried that the behaviour of Howett would have a negative impact on all self published writers.

A writer can expect to receive criticism in the early days as they study to become a professional writer. This is usually followed by their work being corrected by an editor, who will be critical and make corrections to spelling and grammar. An advantage of content outsourcing is that a professional writer will have their work proofread so that you can be sure that all copy is free of errors.

The author has received negative comments from a reviewer and the public regarding her incorrect use of English grammar and spelling ability. However, a professional writer for a reputable copywriting agency will have any errors or poor use of English grammar corrected, thus avoiding the bulk of criticism. The face of an online business is its website, which is why all copy must be factually and grammatically correct to convey a professional image.
