After four weeks of work placement at Engage Web, I am all of a sudden on my last day. The resources and experience Lianne, Darren, and the team at Engage Web, have provided has been an incredible help to both my university course and my future career path.
I started my placement at Engage Web four weeks ago, after I had finished my second year at Oxford Brookes University, studying Business and Marketing Management. The first week was a blur, with the extent of new information, routines and meeting the lovely team at Engage Web, but everyone made settling in very easy and offered me more knowledge and understanding than I could have asked for.
My future career passion, when I started, was definitely in digital marketing, however, I needed real experience to distinguish which area I enjoyed the most. Working at Engage Web, I have been able to understand both the content and technology side of digital marketing, shadowing the everyday tasks that each side offers to clients.
For content, I observed the planning behind social media posts, Facebook Ad setup and reviews, and even got the chance to write my own content pieces. Writing articles for Engage Web’s blog encouraged me to improve my writing style and understand what sort of content is relevant and which isn’t for a specific company. Alongside this, I had the opportunity to assist in constructing the weekly Engage Web newsletter, as well as uploading some of my own written content to client’s sites.
With the Tech Team, I was shown the monthly routine of client strategy reports, as well as researching and developing my own search engine optimisation (SEO) audit, observing the improvement of a site’s page speed for improving a client’s search result placement in Google, and understanding how and why Google Analytics and Google Search Console are used and applied.
Additionally, I had the chance to observe and monitor the setup, production and evaluation of one of Darren’s webinars, alongside experiencing my very first networking event!
Having experienced almost every aspect of Engage Web’s responsibilities, I have come away with a further interest in the content side of digital marketing, and how certain elements of content writing can improve a site’s visibility to users. Having said that, I have also thoroughly enjoyed understanding the more modern-technology approach to website analysis, in comparison to the more traditional marketing taught at university.
To conclude, I would like to say a huge thank you to Lianne, Darren, Alan, Emily, Penny and John at Engage Web for teaching me an abundance of skills, knowledge and experience that I can take away with me, and for making my first office experience so welcoming. I am now progressing into my third and final year at university with much more confidence and insight of digital marketing.
