Mobile phone companies face competition with Facebook Messenger

Mobile phone companies may soon be facing competition from a newly updated Android app for Facebook Messenger. Till now, Facebook users have been able to communicate with Facebook Messenger, although you have to be a member of the social networking site to do so. Following an update, people can use the app to create an account with Messenger providing just their phone number and name.

Users will be able to message their mobile contacts without being signed up to Facebook, although it will be simple enough for Facebook to encourage people to join when links to pictures and status updates are sent out. Once a person is signed up to Messenger, just tap on the link to get started and then share conversations, photos and more. An analyst with ZK Research, Zeus Kerravala said:

“For Facebook, it’s all about mindshare. Once someone uses them for messaging, there will be plenty of opportunities to get them to join Facebook. People can send links to pics, status updates, etc. Getting more people on Facebook leads to more money for the company. More users equals more ads.”

Kerravala also pointed out that texting plans could be expensive with some companies and Facebook could offer an alternative, which could be a problem for the phone providers. The Messenger service is only available in five countries so far but will be available in the US and UK shortly. This news could also mean changes are required to the SEO campaign of companies using Facebook. Search engine optimisation includes social networking sites to build recognition for a company brand.
