A spelling mistake has been discovered in the name of a road in a Cambridgeshire village, but correcting it would be prohibitively expensive according to a parish official.
In Upper Cambourne, which stands on part of the old Bourn airfield, all the roads are named after World War II aircraft that were based at RAF Bourn. Sterling Way was originally intended to have been named after the Stirling bomber, but an error occurred somewhere in the communication between the parish and district councils.
According to John Vickery, the parish clerk, the cost of correcting the road name could potentially run into thousands. In addition to changing the road signs, Vickery claims there could be other costs related to changing driving licenses and house deeds, as well as costs to businesses.
