Mis-Apps threaten to undermine success

Mis-Apps threaten to undermine success

More people are connecting with businesses using apps, as mobile devices become increasingly popular. As much as these wonderful pieces of software are though, it is not all rosy in the garden, as recent news stories clearly demonstrate.

Naturally, the way to make an app a success is to have a good app. If it does not work, does not deliver what is promised and does not engage the consumer; it ain’t going anywhere. In many ways, it is much like creating quality SEO content.

However, SEO is also important to marketing the software in the first place; after all, if no one knows just how good an app is; it ain’t going anywhere. Again.

An excellent example of just how content creators use search engine optimisation to flog their wares can be seen with the flight of Angry Birds. However, such apps as this are now on the receiving end of many complaints.

Phone bill regulator PhonepayPlus has seen the number of consumer complaints rise by 300%, with in app purchases by their children resulting in huge and unexpected bills.

There are also concerns over malware embedded in counterfeit software, often downloaded by “naive” kids, which adds erroneous bill charges.

However, bigger concerns exist.

There was news this week that some people are relying on advice from medical apps to diagnose potentially cancerous moles. When interrogated, US researchers found that four such apps incorrectly diagnosed malignant growths over 30% of the time.

As much as flogging apps and anything else is increasingly reliant on SEO, it is imperative that ethics are applied as much as clever new techniques.
