Meta to reinstate Trump’s Facebook and Instagram account

Just over two years ago, Donald Trump, the 45th president of the United States of America, was blacklisted from mainstream social media. Trump’s accounts on platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram were ‘permanently’ suspended after the attack on the United States Capitol Building by his supporters on January 6th, 2021, just a couple of months after Trump’s bid for a 2nd term as president were unsuccessful.

However, in November of last year, Mr. Trump was successful in a different election with far lower stakes, as Twitter users voted in favour of his account being reinstated in a poll created on the platform by its new CEO Elon Musk. Despite having not tweeted since his reinstation, the good news keeps on coming for the former president, as it has now been announced that Facebook and Instagram’s parent company Meta has decided to allow his accounts on the company’s platforms.

In a blog post, Nick Clegg, former UK Deputy Prime Minister and Meta’s current president of global affairs, announced the decision, vowing that “new guardrails” had been put in place to prevent another incident like the one just over two years ago from happening again.

All signals point to the idea that Trump plans to run for office once again in 2024, with his social media presence sure to be an integral element of his campaign. In his blog post, Clegg wrote:

“The public should be able to hear what their politicians are saying — the good, the bad and the ugly — so that they can make informed choices at the ballot box.”

It’s almost certain that Trump’s return to social media will be loud, emphatic and highly controversial. For better or worse, it’s hard to argue with his ability to create engagement and passion through social media.

While we definitely aren’t interested in political insurrections or presidential elections, here at Engage Web we also know a thing or two about content. Speak to our team today if you want to know how to generate interesting social media posts your audience will love.
