Merchants celebrate arrival of Google’s Search As You Type

Google has launched a new feature for customers of Adwords. Search As You Type will be available to merchants using Google Adwords, who can sign up with Google to receive the feature. Merchants will be able to incorporate the new feature into their sites to provide instant results for customers.

As a user types a search term into the search engine, predictive results will appear along with thumbnail photos, so that users can locate the item they are looking for much quicker. Once a product has been identified, just clicking on the photo enables a user to purchase the item. According to Google, the feature will “enhance a merchant’s existing website search functionality”. Initially, the feature is only available to Google Adwords partners in the US. Some of the first partners to sign up include Hasbro, manufacturers of the Monopoly game who already have the feature embedded on their website. More retailers are to receive the function shortly, although no mention has been made of the UK receiving the feature as yet. Jennifer Dulski, Google’s Shopping Product Management Director said:

“The Search As You Type pilot is one of the many steps we’re taking to provide technology, tools and traffic to help power the retail ecosystem.”

Google’s main search function introduced predictive results in 2010, so that results appear and change as a user types. The latest feature introduced by Google could affect a company’s SEO campaign. Introduction to the UK, will affect companies in all areas of the country, like Liverpool and London, which could make some search engine optimisation (SEO) jobs more complex.
