Google Maps will now incorporate train travel routes and timetables in the UK, just in time for London Olympics visitors. A collaboration between Google Maps and thetrainline.com will make it easier for UK travellers to plan their journey using the incorporated information of 170,000 routes across the UK, 8,000 bus stops, 2,500 rail stations and over 250 underground/tube stations.
Walking directions are provided on the website, with a number of bus timetables so that travellers can make connections on time. A facility also allows users to gain access to the website to look for train tickets and make bookings. The product development director at thetrainline.com, Richard Rowson said:
“We want to make sure consumers are always able to consider rail options when making a journey, and this innovation will help train travellers nationwide to do that by planning their route more easily.”
The introduction of the Google Maps collaboration has been timed to be ready for the London 2012 Olympics, as the UK prepares to welcome more than 31 million visitors. Over 50 languages are available on Google Maps to help tourists to travel all over the UK. The chairman of VisitBritain, Christopher Rodrigues said:
“Millions of visitors plan their itinerary using Google Maps and this additional information will act as a catalyst and inspire them to discover all that is wonderful about our great country.”
