This weekend the Premier League season kicks off once again, with Manchester United having their customary early game against a promoted side at Old Trafford, while Liverpool take on Spurs at White Heart Lane. However, Liverpool have already scored a victory of sorts, pipping their rivals from across the M56 to the title… the title of most searched for Football team.
The Merseyside team was searched for in Google 16 million times in July, a whole 3 million more searches than Chelsea, who finished second. Champions Manchester United trailed in fourth, behind Arsenal, with just 9 million searches.
Despite the apparent SEO success for Liverpool, the high number of Google searches for Liverpool could be down to the fact that their website’s domain name is liverpoolfc.tv, which isn’t something you would type in without knowing it. Manchester United’s on the other hand is manutd.com, which would receive a lot more type in traffic.
Another reason for the success of Liverpool in the search engines is the level of news coverage generated by the club in July, with Xabi Alonso moving to Real Madrid for £30 million, and Steven Gerrard’s much publicised court case for fighting with a DJ in a nighclub.
While Liverpool are top of the Google league, the most improved football team has to be Burnley; searches for season tickets for Burnley increased by 5,000% according to Google figures.
With so many increased searches for season tickets in Burnley, any websites that have performed SEO in Burnley for phrases surrounding the Clarets would have received a huge spike in traffic this summer since the team’s promotion to the Premier League.
The top 10 football team searches for July were:
- Liverpool 16million
- Chelsea 13m
- Arsenal 9.1m
- Manchester United 9m
- Portsmouth 4m
- Tottenham Hotspur 3.3m
- Manchester City 1.9m
- Sunderland 1.8m
- Blackburn 1.7m
- Everton 1.7m
