Google must have known when it started photographing the world for its Street View application that it would land itself in all sorts of hot water with people who just simply didn’t want to be pictured. However, the latest news story about Google snapping itself into strife hasn’t come about because of some being pictured, rather their smalls have been photographed – and then uploaded to Google for posterity (as opposed to just covering their posterior).
An unnamed woman from Japan has filed a court case against Google because the search giant caught a snap of her washing line when it was laden with her dainty briefs. In the city of Fukuoka (where else) the woman is seeking 600,000 yen for her embarrassment (in the region of £4,500), claiming that she was forced to move home and she lost her job after the incident where her knickers were placed on Google Street View for the world and his dog to see.
The woman told her local newspaper:
“I was overwhelmed with anxiety that I might be the target of a sex crime.”
“It caused me to lose my job and I had to change my residence.”
“I could understand if it was just a picture of the outside of the apartment, but showing a person’s underwear hanging outside is absolutely wrong.”
The woman says she found the picture of her own underwear when she was using Google to find a picture of her apartment. The sight of her own briefs on the Internet caused her to panic, and to become worried that she was being recorded in everything that she did (which of course where Google is concerned, isn’t a completely baseless concern).
