We have been testing our top secret microblogging application recently with some good results (of course!) and we have done several tests with and without meta keywords and descriptions.
Because the code in our application is so lightweight, we have found that blog posts without keywords and descriptions are still reaching high positions in Google very quickly, with Google snippet text being that of the blog post itself.
We class this as a success for content, and whilst not having to enter keywords and a description to each post is great for the user (and for us to program automatically), the lack of it is not negative when it comes to search results.
