Is TikTok actually the new Google?

Short-form social media video platform TikTok has dominated the internet for a few years now, showing no signs of slowing down. The app’s astronomical success has sent shockwaves to the world’s biggest social media and technology companies.

Instagram has recently cracked down on users sharing videos through TikTok that were originally produced for Instagram Reels. Furthermore, it is even thought that young people are deciding to use social media apps, TikTok in particular, as an alternative to traditional search engines such as Google.

Many users believe that TikTok can be operated similarly to how Google has been used for 20 years, over which time it has become so renowned within modern digital societies. When trying to find a place for food, instead of searching for ‘Restaurants in Liverpool’ on Google, it is argued that the same search can be performed on TikTok with faster, clearer and more authentic results. Users want quick results and visuals, which TikTok offers in abundance.

Regarding situations such as this, it may be suggested that TikTok is in the process of overtaking Google as a search engine. However, in truth, conquering Google as a search engine is an improbable task for any company any time in the near future. Despite the user experience advantages boasted by TikTok, allegations of misinformation hold it back from gaining widespread reliability. On the other hand, not only can you rely on Google for accurate, dependable results, but maximising your search engine optimisation (SEO) efforts on Google can also help to generate new leads for your business.
