When marketing your business online, there’s no question that social media is an integral tool for increasing the reach of your brand.
These days, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t have at least one social media account. Whether it’s Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter or Instagram, it’s estimated that more than half of the world’s population* is connected online, with social network platforms having tripled their user base over the last decade.
So, it’s no wonder that many people are setting up shop through these platforms. After all, it’s the biggest audience in the world.
Many people are now successfully running their businesses entirely through social media, with no need for a physical store. By promoting their products through reels, posts and influencer endorsement, there’s no cap on the reach that these networks provide – meaning that businesses are able to pull in audiences from anywhere in the world.
It can be easy, then, to assume that you have no need for any other platform, as you reap the rewards right there from an app on your smartphone. However, if you’re choosing to run your business solely through social media, then there’s a few important things you need to consider.
You don’t own your social media accounts
If you make all your business from a social media platform – Facebook, for example – what happens if one day your account suddenly gets hacked? Or blocked?
If you’re making a solid profit from LinkedIn, what happens if the platform suddenly goes bust? Stranger things have happened.
A website, however, is your own property.
Think of it like buying a house, instead of renting. Once you purchase that domain, no one can take it away from you. Plus, people will then be able to find you, should you have lost all your contacts through social media.
Which brings us to the next point…
People still use Google
If you claim that you don’t need a website, because you get all your business through social media, it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Of course you get all your business through social media – because it’s the only strategy you’re using!
By having a website, you’re opening yourself up to a much wider audience by including the many people who, each day, are using search engines to find businesses just like yours. Without it, odds are, they’re finding your competitors instead.
