A new feature is being launched by Google which will translate the contents of an email into one of 53 foreign languages. The instant translation tool will be introduced to users of Gmail over the coming days, making communication easier for businesses and individuals.
For people who are multilingual, the feature can easily be switched off, while someone who regularly receives foreign emails can set the feature to translate each time an email is received. Jeff Chin, the product manager for Google translate, says that the introduction of the translation device is another step closer to communication technology being able to translate effortlessly. He said:
“The next time you receive a message in a language other than your own, just click on translate message in the header at the top of the message, and it will be instantly translated into your language.”
Google recently conducted a global business trial, during which automatic translation helped businesses to communicate overseas more effectively. This result prompted the launch of the device, which could help with marketing for companies. Further developments in this area, perhaps moving to automatic translation of search engine results, could lead to necessary changes of a SEO campaign.
According to Chin, a customer wrote to Google to say that he had set the automatic translate function on his mother’s Gmail account to her native language, so that all emails were translated immediately and were easy for her to read. However, accuracy may be a problem, as Google makes intelligent guesses to provide the closest translation.
