Instant Timeline to help people get Twittering

Social microblogging site Twitter has reportedly been trialling a new feature, which aims to make it easier for first-time users to integrate into its platform.

The new service that the company is offering, Instant Timeline, has been designed to help people get off the ground running once they sign up to Twitter. With it being said that many users find the initial setting-up process to be, at times, slow and a little confusing, the social platform is hoping that the new feature will enhance its customer base’s user experience, which would lead to greater retention.

Instant Timeline – which, according to The New York Times, had been recently piloted amongst a number of Android users – would work by having access to a new member’s contacts. After scanning the details with the user’s permission, the feature would see if any of the contacts are fellow Twitter members, as well as the profiles that they follow, before creating a news feed containing posts it believes the new customer would like.

Unlike other social networks, Twitter would not require the user to follow the accounts that Instant Timeline forages; rather, they would then have the option to do so, if any pique their interest.

With the feature having been announced at Twitter’s inaugural Analyst Day last November, the social firm’s CEO, Dick Costolo, said at the time that the new feature will help people to feel “deeply immersed” in Twitter from the get-go. This seems aimed at enticing new users to the service, which has been described by some commentators as having had a slow uptake.
