Independence Day fails to influence US search patterns

A report published last week that looked for differences in search patterns during America’s 4th July celebrations found that, surprisingly, little changed over the course of the week.

Search Engine Land compiled a report, examining figures from Bing, that suggested US internet users searched for the same things during the Independence Day celebrations that they do during any other week.

Examining the queries made through Bing over the period, Search Engine Land observed that celebrities remained much more popular among users than the country’s important historical figures, as well as topics directly concerning Independence Day.

Bing found that searches for the birth of the United States of America were trumped by searches enquiring about the child of Kate Middleton and Prince William. Likewise, the number of searches regarding the unborn child of R&B rapper Kanye West and TV personality Kim Kardashian surpassed queries into the origins of the world’s most influential nation.

Independence Day as a topic fell short against searches for Kate Middleton, controversial pop star Rebecca Black and even reality child star Alana Thompson – better known as ‘Honey Boo Boo’.

Searches for popular contemporary novels – such as the Hunger Games and the Harry Potter series – were more numerous over the 4th July week than searches for information on the historic Declaration of Independence.

Since Bing’s findings have shown that not all current events dominate user search patterns, the consistency of some contemporary topics does demonstrate the importance of observing trends in order to implement the most effective SEO strategy.
