If you love your SEO, set it free

Sometimes, if you love something, the best thing to do is to set it free. The rest of this well-known phrase, distilled into song form by Sting, goes on to promise that if the love is returned the loved one will come back to you someday. This second part is less important for the subject at hand, which is, of course, SEO. This is what Sting was really singing about after all – at least in my mind.

If you really care for your website, it can be tempting to monitor its rankings obsessively. Site owners have been known to check in several times a day. This is not healthy, but neither is it uncommon. Even those professionals in SEO jobs talk about having to make rules for themselves regarding the checking of search engine rankings from their iPhones, or over the weekend when they really should be relaxing.

Relentless checking of your website isn’t going to do your search engine optimisation plan any good. Instead, set regular times for checks that conform with your progress plan. This allows you to check in regularly without it turning into a waste of valuable time.

This doesn’t mean that you should launch your SEO campaign, then leave it for months at a time. There is a difference between healthy time off and absolute neglect. As with everything to do with search engine optimisation, it’s about finding balance. Find a way to monitor your site without turning into a rankings-obsessed optimisa-maniac.

If you love your site, set it free. Unlike the loverly subjects of Sting’s song, your site isn’t likely to decide to throw you over, but will still be there waiting patiently for you to return.
